I am very sorry to `play at being a moderator', but please!!:- On Fri 5 Aug a long message "Subject: Bent fish, terrorist dolphins & human evolution..." went to Techdiver which had successive long sections about 3 different subjects:- (1) Fish suffering from decompression sickness. (2) Dolphins trained to attack scuba divers. (3) Miskito Indian scuba divers suffering from decompression sickness. Putting several different subjects into the same message makes life difficult for readers who (like me) keep separate email folders for the various aspects of diving that get discussed on techdiver and elsewhere. This message wants to go in two places (or in 3, if the mention of anti-diver dolphins encourages a rush of email which will need a new separate folder). Thus I will have to keep 3 copies of it, filling out my email store allowance. Then I may have to save store space by separating the subjects by removing each subject from all but one of the copies, by the risky process of direct surgery with a text editor on the email system's folder files. Luckily my emailer has a `PREBUILD' command to tell it to rebuild one of its folder's index files after accidental or deliberate damage to it or to its folder. I feel that this message's author should have sent it out as 3 separate messages, each about one of the abovementioned subjects. -------------------------------------------- Next day a reader replied (Subject: decompression luck or evolution (was: Bent fish, terrorist dolphins & human evolution...), quoting its long "bent Miskito Indians" section in full, adding to emailer store usage. When replying to a long message which all your readers will have new copies of already, why not edit the quoted matter down to the minimum needed for the reader to tell what part of it is being replied to, representing deleted matter by `...'?
