Subject: Re: Hogathian Precepts and the Isolation Valve

I would like to thank everyone for the wealth of pointers.

I have already adopted many of the principles, based in large part on von
Maier/Solo Diving, Gary Gentile's books and course,
techdiver discussions of the past, and observing the practice of the many
more experienced divers here in New York.

I plan on *slowly* adopting the vast majority of the Hogarthian rig -one
piece at a time, as $ permits.

One item that I don't think is addressed is my practice when for one reason
or another I am buddied up with another diver. Now, I have
only ever been truly scared in situations caused by a buddy. (And yes
Tony, I include that dive that Zero must have told you about.
I wasn't scared - I knew that John would go snorkelling and bring me some
gas. Tell Zero I haven't forgotten I owe him for the O2 cleaning
etc, and dinner for everyone on the boat.)

I wind up with a buddy for one of two reasons - either I am asked to buddy
up with a relative newbie, or on vacation
when the boat has an inviolable rule. In both of these situations, I
explain the *REAL* signal for an out of air situation:
an outstretched hand reaching for the regulator in my mouth.

Forget about all that waving around - waggle hand="I have a problem",
throat cut sign="out of air", pretend to push J valve="I am on reserve/low
on air", point to SPG and waggle hand="low on air", point to SPG and flash
5 fingers="low on air - 500 psi", wave hand horizontally in towards
regulator="I need to buddy breath", etc. etc. All of the

Just take the regulator out of my mouth. I promise to let it go.

My objective is to reduce their stress level in general, and to reduce mine
if they are out of air. After all, that is what they are going to do
anyway,
might as well be realistic.

Safe Diving,

Wrolf
