Today, after our dive, the Boston Bomb Squad was kind enough to lend us their bomb-disarming robot, "Leonard", to take the lids off of our MLS lights. We lined all of the MLS's up on the dock, and took cover behind the fire truck while "Leonard" went to work. Since this is a routine thing at the dive boat dock after a wreck dive, the Bomb Squad has programmed "Leonard" to use the special tool provided by Dive Rite to remove the lid of the MLS. With the deluxe package, Dive Rite provides a welders mask and gloves, and a set of catcher's pads, usually suficient for a short dive. Well, Leonard was doing fine on the first two, successfully removing the lid without sparking it and was able to disarm them, but the third one was his last: as the lid turned ( we were watching from the monitor behind the fire truck), the light exploded "like a bomb" and blew the head clean off of the hapless robot. We ran around from behind the truck, and there was "Leonard", his left "arm" holding the bottom of the canister, like a partial egg shell, and his right arm holding the stubb of the tool. His head was nowhere to be found, and all that was there was a smoking mess of wires. We spend several houirs combing Boston harbor for the head, but to no avail. The Bomb Squad said they were "very upset" about the loss of the head , and were considering taking action against the maker of the MLS, for whom they named the robot. _____________________________________________________________________ Sent by RocketMail.
