Here is my theory.  Have you ever noticed a "foggyness" (actually more of a 
"blurryness") in shallow water while diving or snorkeling while it is 
raining or near a freshwater runoff?  This is due to the fact that the index 
of refraction is different for freshwater vs. saltwater.  Until the water 
mixes well, light will refract as it moves through the unmixed medias.  
Gases of different densities will also have differing refractive indexes.  I 
would expect to see "foggyness" immediately after a gas switch until the 
gases are sufficiently mixed to give a relatively uniform medium.  Sound 
good?
