Subject: Rob Palmer
It appears that all comments regarding Rob, whether from me,
others ,or from the anonomous remailers or through telnet are being
attributed to me, when in fact what I did was use my own name from this
account, or interserv, and use quotes from Rob's own book to describe
the folly of deep air diving.

The point was to demonstrate that even a long-time professional
diver like Palmer, who had done so much, will get killed doing something
stupid like deep air diving.

We need to learn from Rob, both from the books he wrote, which as
I mentioned make you want to go cave diving, and from the senseless end
he gave himself.

Learn from this, avoid the deep air promoters, and let's see it
stopped. I liked Palmer, I communicated with him privately, and I hate
what happened to him.

In my position, as an extreme diver, and explorer and one who
holds deep diving cave records for distance, it is my reponsability to
point out that I do not dive deep on air, that I dive to a 130 aed max,
and usually use 100 feet, that I dive low oxygen ppo2's, that I do not
dive even to 1/3'ds, but never touch my back gas, I use safety bottles,
I use backup scooters, I use safety teams, and I do everything I can to
reduce the risk of my dives. I promote sound phyiscal fitness and strong
buddy diving. I promote the concept of identifying the real risk of a
dive and doing everything to prevent it, including invoking Option
Number One: "don't dive".

Can those who criticze me say the same?

I can also say that our standards are developed using commercial
diving and military diving information and over a long period of
experience, and it is no accident that the large agencies like PADI and
NAUI came up with similar standards a long time ago, and the reason is
very, very simple: the accident to dive ratio in the zones beyond 130
aed and 1.4 ppo2, and now we know physiological reasons why this is no
good.

NAUI and PADI will be coming up with tech programs, and then the
nonsense will stop. NACD is also developing basic tech programs, and the
WKPP is developing advanced tech programs. Soon, there will be a choice
between doing it right and doing it wrong.
