Subject: saturation / ears
Marc,

I checked into this ear clearing problem long ago.

Those who have performed various tests in medical labs and hyperbaric
facilities assure me that every animal they have compressed has no problem
clearing during descent. One experimenter informed me that he wasted his
youth trying to bend small mammals to no avail.

Before finding this out I was going to feed them just before submersion so
they would be chewing during descent.

These small creatures commonly live in closed spaces or pockets where they
are subjected to constant small pressure changes resultig from the slightest
wind or air currents that move across the openings. They should be well
addapted to these changes since hearing is vital to survival in their little
world.

I have already gone around and around with the animal rights people who
pelted me with threats and partitions for mercy. This project is not an
experiment on the mice - I know what will happen with them and they will be
fine.
This is actually a refinement of the same project I did for my senior year
science project many years ago. It will serve as a demonstration of
technique and problem solving for educational purposes and any actual
experiments will be periferal to the housing and not involve any apperciable
risk to my tiny subjects (corrosion, material compatability, pioneer life
form growth, . . . ). There will be more risk to the tending divers that to
the mice.

Chuck
