I use a SP D-350 (predecessor to the D-400) as my backup nitrox regulator
on mixed-gas dives. However, I originally used it as my backup trimix
regulator, and I continue to use it occasionally as my backup regulator on
deep air dives (most recently, about 2 hours ago). From my experience, it
breathes easier than the G-250, both on inhale & exhale, at all depths I've
tried it (down to 400+fsw). I like it MUCH better than my Odins (quite
frankly, I don't know what all the hype about Odins is....sure they have a
larger ID hose & all, but in the real world I've found them to be adequate
below 150', MISERABLE at decompression depths, and the most temperamental
regulators I've ever owned). The D-350 does seem a little finicky if ignored
in a closet for too long, but generally I've found it to be reliable.
I know Jim Bowden was using a D-400 on his deep cave dives with
Sheck in Mexico. When I spoke with him last (January this year), he
seemed extremely satisfied with it, and told me it worked fine for him
down to 700 or 800 feet. I don't know whether or not Sheck was also using
one, or if they were using them at the time of the accident.

I'm not a cave diver, and I've never noticed any difference in performance
depending on relative position - I'll pay more attention next time I use
my D-350 (next week). There's not a whole lot to adjust inside - VERY
different mechanism from the balanced adjustable series. It has a
Dive/Predive switch which seems to reduce free-flow problems. Parts cost
about the same.

Hope that helps....
