       Thank you to everyone who offered help and
       advice on this vexing issue. Unfortunately
        no-one came up with the ONLY answer that 
       will satisfy the original design criteria.
                    It is, of course:

        The knobs will change colour automatically 
           to indicate the hydrocarbon content
                 of the gas they contain
