Subject: Re: lights in low vis
The effect of light backscatter in low vis is a function of suspended
particle size and angle of incident light - not of light intensity.
True, a higher wattage light will produce more backscatter, but the
effect of an intensity change (as noticed by the diver) is negligible
compared to change in beam focus or suspension density. The AUL 14 is
a good light. I'm currently using a similar light that I created
myself (closer to Gavin in design), but the key is to have good control
over beam focus, and to position the light head in a manner so as to
reduce scatter. Generally, positioning the light head forward and at
an oblique to your line of sight will minimize this problem. I dive
frequently in zero to minimal visibility conditions, and occasionally
prefer a higher wattage bulb, depending on the dive objective.
