Your not alone in suggesting that tech divers move towards surface-supplied breathing gas. I would suggest that it's not feasible for many applications (caves, wreck penetrations, etc.). I've given it serious consideration, and I feel that the costs (not only $$, but efficiency of operation allowable only through total autonamy, as well as additional risks) outweigh the benefits for me & what I do. However, I think you're right - it probably does have broader applications in tech. diving operations than it's presently used for. I suspect it's just unfamiliar technology to many.
