Hello all, I would like to thank all of you who were kind enough to share your knowledge. You are the best! Almost all replies I got were as private email. I'll try to summarize the main points here. Sorry if I missed anything and feel free to append your comments. The Odin first stage is a lot more complex than the ScubaPro's. A couple of people strongly recommended the Poseidon service manual. However, the myth that the Odin falls apart like an impossible 3D puzzle has been challenged. I was assured that at no single moment more than a two springs will poke me in the eye. The Poseidon seems to have at least two dedicated tools (part numbers 3605 combination tool #1 and 3606 Combination tool #2). Although one might consider those nice to haves, they are not strictly necessary and you can get by with a thin metric wrench cut out of an aluminum sheet. Other tools required are metric allen wrenches (including a _long_ 1.5mm -- I think this is only for the 2nd stage?) and open ended spanners (up to 27mm). Other than that just the regular stuff, including the o-ring remover, low pressure gauge, 5" vise, 32oz hammer... :-) The D400 or the G250 can be readily used with the Odin 1st stage. The only adjustment to make is to detune the intermediate pressure to around 140psi. The G250 and D400 have maximum intermediate pressures of 160psi. I was told that the Odin usually is set for 175. Because the regulator was designed to work at 175psi and we are using it at 140psi there might be an alleged lost of performance. A negative aspect is that Odin 1st and the 2nd stages are _BOTH_ upstream valves. It means if anything goes overpressure they slam shut. In contrast downstream regulators would free flow and you could still breathe (I new about the 2nd stage and that is probably why George trashes it all the time, the 1st stage is news to me). As for the ScubaPro stuff... Someone asked me why people dont use the D400 in caves. I believe its because it can not be opened u/w like the G250. I personally like the way the D400 breathes much better, but again, I dont do caves. No one had anything bad to say about the MK20 and a couple of people than can dive either prefer the MK20. The main advantage of the Odin seems to be its layout. I remember a couple of years ago someone mentioning that the SP's werent closed 1st stages and that contaminants, namely oil, could potentially come in contact with your mix. That sounded awfully anal and I dismissed it at the time. Best regards, - Ed -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
