Is it possible that the thing is designed to leak the same way Sherwood
first stages do? Don't they design in a certain degree of air leakage -
to maintain positive pressure inside the housing, preventing water from
entering the works of the thing?

It would seem that an O-ringless design would have to be so. What do
those who know think?
