I believe that it is well known that a sudden change in gas concentrations can result in black-out. That is why we stage down to the high He mixes, and why we do a gradual change to each mix (1-new & 2-old / 2-new & 1 old / all new, for example). He might have just wanted to try it to see what happens. Who knows?
