There are a number of different methods used to ensure that one does not grab a wrong reg at depth. The simplest involves using a baggie over the mouthpiece. Another involves using a surgical tubing brace over it. Both involve making it impossible to breathe from the regulator without doing something special. I remember Ed's rig. He had a large number of regulators and bottles hung from and around his equipment. I do not know what method he used to discriminate regulators while diving with multiple gas mixtures. I do know that he felt strongly about diving with the same rig, even in a quarry, to be sure he was well acquainted with his equipment placement.
