The idea is to keep the moisture away from the body. Cotton absorbes it and keeps it there. The material is very important for moisture transport , especially on the first layer. I was not clear about the material, what I use direct on the skin is called silkweight capilene t-shirt. My normal socks( volumewise) are Falke Double dry, which I can use with normal shoes on the way to the divesite, they use a polyester fibre for moisture transport. Can you name a manufacturer and a designation for the polypropylene socks?
