Subject: Added Info Regarding Ed Suarez

I've received several comments from divers about Ed's death and will add
a little more since yesterday. The posting yesterday was just a few bare
data points from a 1:30 am phone call. Not the best time for such info!

Last night, while I was taking Glen's Open Water class, since he led the
team to West Virginia, the group returned - Glen Klag, Harvey Storck, and
Ron Tolbert. They had recovered Ed and had info on the dive, still not a
great deal of detail - they weren't in the most communicative of moods.

The exact depth of the dive still was not real clear, but on the order of
300+ft. On the return, the plan was for a deco stop about 220ft. A gas
switch from bottom mix (heliox) to travel mix was to take place. Ed, from
the report I got, picked up an air reg by mistake. He was attached to his
scooter which had been acting up during the dive. Seemed to black out, and
went spiraling up with the scooter. A dive partner was unable to get a reg
back in his mouth which was clamped shut. They had to leave him and deco
and exit.

Ed was carrying six bottles of gas on the dive, and as has pointed out, used
a LOT of regulators. The ascent was from about 220 to 150 or less in a few
seconds. Glen said that Ed looked like a massive embollism had occured.
Not very pleasant to haul a close friend out under even the best of conditions.

This was not the first occurrance of this nature with Ed. Same thing happened,
same mine, equipment, etc., two weeks ago with Harvey. That time Harvey was
able to get a reg in his mouth and he stayed conscious.

The group took the NSS/CDS recovery report with them to record details. It
may be best to see that report for the most accurate info. John Crea will
no doubt be seeing it at some point.

Sorry about being the bearer of bad news. Ed was a friend, occasional dive
partner, and teacher. He and Betty were truly nice people. A lot of us in
the Wash DC area will miss Ed.

Ralph
