Hank, Let me start by saying I am not a WKPP member, (objectivity qualification) but I was there at Wakulla when this particular event took place and I can tell you that, in truth, there is nothing in the facts of this incident that could be used to denigrate George or the WKPP. Or show incompetence or procedural problems with the organization and management of dive operations. There is no amount of peer pressure that would cause me or any other competent diver to not effect a self rescue in time of emergency. If in fact that is actually what happened. But in fact, this diver, like myself, was not a regular member of WKPP and was "visiting", assisting with safety and equipment handling. This was back in the days where George and the WKPP would open the places up to visiting Cave Divers and allow them to see how they do things first hand. (They would also glean new divers from these ranks the only real requirement being that you were willing to make some kind of commitment, not just show up and expect to be the long range exploration coordinator on the second day.) Well, actually whatever happened to this guy, the actual events really read as a testamonial to the professional response of JJ and the rest of the group. In about 2 minutes he was on the beach and breathing. And I will tell you that it is obvious to me that this was a situation that could have gone the other way very easily. This type of scenario would probably wind up a tragedy 9 times out of 10 but look who was there to make it come out the other way. Please remember that I am not "kissing butt", a WKPP member, or anything else, I just believe in the truth, and that the truth serves. I was there and there is nothing in this incident that could be used to detract from the WKPP. In fact I'm surprised that George hasn't referred to this more to illustrate the professionalism that goes on there. After all it was actually a successful rescue. So, rave on, but if you do get your story straight, because that one don't wash with me, I was there and I saw it. By the way, the guy was at the resturant eating sushi that night and nobody said so much as a bad word to him. In fact he was in the water at Wakulla the next day, much to the chagrin of .... his wife, not George. Mark Steingart
