I was at DEMA Friday and Saturday, but did not get to make the full rounds. We split up and tied to spend time with each of our sponors, but that was tough. Most of the time we we at Brownies for the Halcyon display. I saw nothing new, other than the CIS Lunar latest (courtesy of Dr. Z), and a few cosmetic jobs on bullshit crap rebreathers. What is supposed to be new is not yet on the market, like the latest Scuba Pro 500 reg. DUI had the combo TLS/CF suit. Scuba Pro had the electric underwear. Terry Tysall has a good organization going , and so do some other project guys that were there. Scuba Pro bought Uwatec. Gilliam told me that Patti Mount is now President of IANTD, and Bill Deans has some other title. We had the only new rebreather technology, Stone had the only new attempt at solving the sensor problem (blowing dry gas over them - he used to heat them, and before that he had Rosary Beads attached to them. We still have the only cave-diving rebreather (until proven otherwise). Everybody is promising new scooters - we still have the only one that is a proven winner. A Brazillian bought my demo model from the show, and a few people tried to buy my personal scooter, but I like it too much to sell it, and it has been too many places with me. Rat (Barry Miller) had the backup light - a sure winner, and a much needed addition to technical diving gear, but again, guess who had to develop that (the WKPP ). There were a few Menduno rebreather forums. First they did not want me on the panel due to the usual problem - fear of a hammering, which they got anyway. Then the next day the said my technology was new and unproven. Of course, not a single other rebreather has been used for long range deep cave diving, other than Olivier Isler's , which works on exactly the same principle as mine (RMV) , and as we know in cave and tech diving, nothing is more humilliating to the talkers than the doers. I saw quite a few of my favorite buddies, like Mike Madden, and made a few new ones. I can say this about the "community" - it was REAL interesting to see who was at the Aquatic Center YMCA at 6:00 am each day to work out or swim , and who was walking around looking like death from their stupidity the night before . I went early to be sure to get a lane, and ended up having to pull my Masters card to get in a workout in the long course meters pool, there were so many people in there, and the machines were full as well. Real interesting, and real interesting who is still trying to argue this concept with me. George M.
