  My wife works in Broward General emergency room , and sees this all of the 
time  (usually with bluehairs) - the laryingospasms are usally caused by stroke 
or hypoxia, or , as you mentioned, a shock like cold water. Sounds like this
guy 
should not have been diving in the first place, and that this is more a case of 
dying while diving than from diving
