I was told awhile ago that at a PADI-sanctioned cavern course somebody
saw happening in Florida, there was an interesting resolution of the
conflict between the caver no-snorkels rule and PADI's requirement that
you must have one in open water.  Down on the bottom of the spring, there
was a guideline tied off, running down into blackness, and at the point
it was about to pass into an overhead environment, a bunch of snorkels
were tied off to the line.  

If I ever see this in person, I'll laugh myself silly over it a second time.
