There is something, or so I've heard, called tunnel vision, and one simply does not have the peripheral vision to detect anyone coming from most points of the compass. Anyone who claims otherwise is either constantly swiveling their neck like a very nervous first time diver or paranoid speed freak, and not getting much else done - or sadly deluding themselves. That's why I like to carry a SpareAire. Like the FAQ points out, it is useless for emergency breathing, but makes a handy deterent or diversion - when some clueless idiot runs out of air, they'll go for the SpairAre, rather than your reg, giving you time to either deploy your backup or get the hell out and leave them to their doom. George, obviously, does not need such gimmicks, since the folks he dives with are well trained enough not to fall for such a transparent ploy. But of the divers I often dive with, on you average luck of draw wreck boat, it's safe to say, that if they are smart enough not to be fooled by the SpairAir, they wouldn't have run out of air in the first place.
