Subject: DPV QUESTIONS (and answers)
*** Resending note of 12/09/96 15:53
I received about a dozen responses so far about the DPV questions I posted on
December 6th. Here is a summary of the answers:

1) Mount the light cannister on the harness waist strap, right side.

2) Hold the light in the left hand using a "goodman" handle.
2a) Do not mount on the helmet. NOTE: only one response even suggested wearing
a helmet at all. I guess its a case of "let those who ride decide"

3) Scooter is secured to the diver by tieing a rope to the handles and using a
easy to use boat snap tp clip to the crotch ring of the harness.
Some trial and error is likely as you get the rope to the correct lenght so
as to let the scooter be positioned to where the diver isn't supporting the
load with his/her arms only. ie, the scooter tows the diver by pulling on
the crotch ring. (don't tell my wife, OK?)

4) Neutral bouyancy seems to be preferred, as evidenced by numerous Teknas
having a tube added to the nose to add an air space. This also helps to
reduce the fatigue on the arms because the diver doesn't have to fight the
attitude of the scooter. NOTE: the responses I received were regarding
Teknas, no other brand name was mentioned.

5) The best "protocol" answer was to hit the swimmers and then blow by them.
Although this is what happened to me and my buddy, the proper way is the
way that's taught to most people...the exiting team has the right of way.
On the way in, if a scooter has the room to go around a swimming team then
its OK as long as you don't trash the cave in doing so. Its also easier
for the scooter to give way much like a power boat yields to a sail boat.

6) No one mentioned any books/manuals. There are a couple of magazine articles
but not too much in-depth discussion. It was suggested to obtain the video
"Doing It Right" to get the answers to many of the questions regarding
    gear configuration and set-up.

7) Although a couple of instructors were suggested, the overwhelming respose
was "don't bother", find a place to practice where you don't hurt yourself
and don't trash the area for other divers.

8) The last question was asked with a wink! The answer is:
LONG HOSE, LONG HOSE, LONG HOSE. I think that I understand now.

I had some fun with this posting and I managed to learn something in the
process. Because of the responses both e-mail and phoned in, I only think it
fair that I share the above list.
