With the end of the Civil War, the wooden side-wheeler SULTANA left

military authorities overloaded the vessel to clear out the released
prisoners of war. Enroute she stopped at Helena to clean her boilers, then
increased her load with 50 pigs and 100 barrels of sugar at Memphis.

At Tagleman's Landing, 8 miles above Memphis, Tennessee, her boiler
exploded with tragic consequences. This was followed by a fire. The result
being that the overloaded and weakened decks collapsed dropping the
passengers into the holds. One reference estimates the loss of live at
1547, while another puts the count at 1653.
