Hi Russ. I can't comment on substitutes. However, I'd like to encourage you to keep an open mind about your ability to put one of these things together yourself. Get the video, read the web pages once they're ready, pay attention. Nothing is terribly complicated -- that's a big part of the point, actually. This really has more to do with assembling things than making things. To assemble a Hogarthian rig, you must be able to: - cut webbing or inner tube in a fairly straight line - sear the ends of nylon webbing or line with a lighter - tie a decent knot in cave line - insert tab A into slot B - admit you made a mistake when you bought [whatever] and don't insist on finding a place to use it Gathering the information from a variety of sources about what pieces you need to buy and how to put them together has been much harder than actually putting it together. Hopefully the forthcoming web pages will address that. I hope that the increased convenience in finding this information will seem like a substitute for thinking it all through yourself, though. There is no substitute for that. Meanwhile, buy the Doing It Right video and watch it several times. - Todd p.s. I'm new to this too, so don't believe a word I say. Think it through for yourself, and I suspect you will decide that what I say is true. If not then call me on it. It'll do us both some good to argue about it. > I've been intrigued by the recent posts about equipment configuration. > Home made backplates and harnesses seem to be popular, but I am not > confident of my ability to make such things. > > What commercial makes would do as a substitute?
