Yesterday many of you saw a post that was put up all list tiled use
this on tom mount and it was posted by SM Dick.

The instructor who sent it did contact me and stated he was embarrassed
that it wound up on the list. He stated that he had sent it to George
Irvine on a private mail and was surprised when it was posted.

He then went on to explain that the person he was referring to had been
a good friend of his and dive buddy for five years, that since becoming
and instructor he had developed and attitude, He also stated the person
had taught a deep air course/advanced EANx and allowed students to use
EAN 80. He also related an instance where the instructor did not
perform proper first aid on what I first thought was student it turns
it was not one of the guys students.

I spent the entire day chasing this down plus had three staff members
on it, with the belief I would suspend the instructor in question (the
accused)
1. It turns out that the IDC he attended was 7 and days
2. plus he completed the advanced EANx training, diver medic training
etc. for a total of several additional days.
3.The person/instructor then went back and took training
 through Technical nitrox diver.

He was also accused of offering cave courses for $250.00 as advertised
on a flier that is reported to be circulating so far I have been unable
to get a copy of the stated flier, which the accused says he did not
develop. He stated he is not a cave diver and has no intentions at this
time of being a cave instructor, he does hope to eventually become a
wreck instructor and technical EANx instructor.

It turns out that the accused has only trained basic EANx divers up to
this point he has not even started a deep air or advanced EANx course.
The students we have contacted deny any thing other than the routine
course , except that it was taught quite well.

We called a dive shop the accuser refereed us to the shop owner stated
the only comment he had was that the accused had brought in three
regulators that were in really bad shape one had no intermediate
pressure and two were over pressure. They were supposedly worked on by
another shop but the shop owner found that hard to believe and
suspected the accused had worked on his own regs. The shop plans to
continue servicing the accused. The gas bought was EAN 28 for bottom
mix the shop could not provide EAN 80 for deco for the individual (not
a class) but could provide oxygen or a high EANx mix. The shop owner
stated he had no knowledge of the accused s teaching habits but had
heard rumors from the person doing the accusing.

Now here is the real kicker the instructor doing the accusing wrote the
following letter of recommendation to Tom Doherty about the accused
prior to the IDC. The names have been removed as the individuals do not
need to be named. I hope this satisfies everyones curiosity.

As this was put on the net under the name SM Dick, after being sent to
George the response of our investigation is also on net and if anything
dramatic beyond this occurs we will post it. You may form your own
opinions.

Dear Mr. Doherty:

Mr. --------- has dove with me for over five years.

He is a very responsible, knowledgeable and experienced diver. His most
notable qualifications are:

Outstanding boat handling and seamanship skills. I met ----- on a
dive that another instructor had chartered with him. ----- proved to
be not only an excellent guide and boatmaster, but he was also quick
to respond t
o two emergencies on another dive boat nearby.

Excellent tutor. During an extended underway period with the Navy, he
tutored a fellow sailor through the academic requirements of openwater
diver. H was so thorough that the person he taught challenged the YMCA
Openwat
er course and was able to answer 499 of the 500 question bank used to
make openwater tests. He has since assisted me in teaching 2 complete
courses.

Unique ability to help divers of all levels of certifications perfect
buoyancy and water skills.

----- has great potential as an instructor. He brings the right mix of
enthusiasm, knowledge, experience, and safe diving skills to the sport.
I highly recommend him as an instructor canidate.

As well as his other qualifications, ----- has recently compleeted YMCA
Scuba Lifesaving and Accident Management, YMCA Teaching Assistant, and
YMCA Medic Diver. All three certifications are in process as of this
date.

If you have any questions regarding his training please contact me at
(---) --- ----

Sincerely,

-----------------
YMCA Scuba Instructor ---------
