My mentor, Jack Randall, knows the Taylors fairly well. He showed me several letters from Valerie during the development of the device. From her descriptions, it sounded like it worked pretty damn well. One thing they discovered, however, is that if the POD is on one side of a large metalic structure (specifically a shark cage) and the shark is on the other, the field is apparently disrupted and the shark is not strngly deterred.
