I suppose the name came from the shape. I remember "water wings" from my
childhood, almost the same shape. "Wings" is a U shaped bcd that sits
between a backplate and your tanks. The bladder provides lift along the
periphery of the tanks excluding the bottom. This design and placement
provides bouyany that allows the diver to adjust trim so that they can
swim in a horizontal position and minimize drag. The only downside that I
am aware of is that wings will not position you face up if you are
unconsious. Lift afforded from wings are typically more than a stab
jacket. My Diverite wings support my 104's which weigh somewhere around
65 pounds submerged. If you are diving wet and deep you will want 2 sets
of wings should one happen to fail. When I dive dry I use only 1 set
since in a case of emergency I san use my suit for lift.
