If we lose the anchor line on a wreck, we attach a lift bag to the rope on the reel, and spool the rope off the reel as the bag ascends. When it reaches the surface we tie the rope off to a secure part of the wreck, then cut off the excess. Once on the surface (or close to it) you have a line to do your deco stops at, without moving far from the boat. You can cut the lift bag off when you arrive at the surface, and the rope will eventually rot away. The reels are usually about 2 feet long and hold about 300' of 3/8" sisal rope. I attach mine to my tank with a 50 lb lift bag already attached, ready to go. Joe
