Subject: rebreathers: Chemical O2 generators?

A couple of weeks ago I was diving with two friends who fly 757's in
real life and we got to talking about rebreathers.  After discussing
the basics, one of them asked me why everyone was still using compressed
02 instead of chemical generators.  I told him I had no idea there were
such things, and he went on to say that the commercial carriers had
switched from bottles to chemical generators a long time ago because
they were smaller and easier to handle.

Does anyone out there know anything about these devices, and why no one's
using them for underwater applications?
