Subject: Re: antimalarials vs decompression
The advice that Peter H. provided is essentially the same advice I got
before a recent Solomon Islands diving trip from the head of our infectious
diseases department who has recently written a review on antimaalrial drugs.
Prophylactic doxycycline, one a day (dose?) starting a couple of days prior
to the trip and continuing for 3-6 weeks after the trip, beware of the sun.
Use a personal insecticide with the highest DEET level you can find.
Don't get bitten by insects.
I also carried an emergency course of mefloquin (Larium tm.). In the event
of really bad (eg cerebral involvement) malaria the idea is to take an
enormous dose and get on a plane to civilization and a hospital. The
potential side effects of mefloquin make it unsuitable for prophylaxis if
diving.
