When stainless steel goes through a manufacturing process, deposits of iron
from the cutting tools are left in the stainless. The proper way to take
care of this is to passivate the item once it has gone through all
manufacturing process. Including Drilling holes.

Passivating is an acid bath which does not affect the stainless but will
remove all iron deposites. This process should be done on all stainless
products that are exposed to moisture. This is standard manufacturing procedure.
