Subject: re: HOMEBREW CONTRAPTIONS
Oh come on. Homemade does not necessarily equal dangerous. Some of the best
gear I have ever seen is homemade, or at least hand-made. And this list is
the best source of information on building gear that I've ever come across.
There is a line of course, I don't think anyone is out there trying to build
their own regulators, tanks or manifolds, but I've seen a lot of good
information on building harnesses and lights.

I'm certainly going to build my next harness by hand WKPP style (and save a
lot of money in the process) rather than spring for some techie contraption.
Although I'd personally never to try to build one, I'd take one of George's
hand-built scooters over what's in my local shop anyday.

At least half of the expensive and supposedly "high-end" stuff I see in dive
shops these days is junk. Anyone for a $1200 hoseless computer? Anytime
anyone comes up with better solutions at lower prices I for one would love to
hear about it. -KL

| Two things have become dangerously obvious here lately.
|
| Seems there are two kinds of divers:
|
| 1. Those that depend on their gear to do what's it's supposed to and
| therefore put their money on the best possible for the job.
|
| 2. Those that want good gear but don't want to pay. These include
| the homebrewer (George reformed me with one of his sharp but accurate
| comments) and the cheapster. Homebrew makes it himself, cheapster
| gets his gear by the cheapest means possible.
|
| It comes down to this - when your life and the lifes of those you
| dive with count - do you really want to be diving with the cheap
| stuff?
|
| Not me.
|
| Thank you George for straightening me out on that one.
| (P.S. - I guess you know this means your reel is on hold :) )
| There are those that talk about it, and those that
| do it. The ones that talk about doing it really
| bore me.
