Some good points here... So what your saying is that no matter if there is an spg or not, a diver should be able to spot a problem that would result in loss of air. Okay... But then you don't want to leave that bottle without the spg out of your sight. So that means this paticular 1st stage can only be used for deco bottles, which you would have to keep on your person throughout the dive. Wouldn't it just be easier to standardize all your 1st stages with an spg? I can concur that an spg isn't really needed for a deco bottle, but if I were to use a 1st stage for a stage bottle, it would definatly have to have an spg. It's just easier to have an spg on all your 1st stages, so that they are interchangable for different applications.
