Since David Weaver's death in the Pearse Resurgence last year has again come under discussion on these lists, I'd like to make the following points. In no way do I want to make excuses for the accident, but you should bear in mind that, to the best of my knowledge, there is no formal cave diving training in New Zealand. The few people cave diving there have mainly come from a speleo background and are just out there doing it. And it usually takes both a critical number of cave divers and a critical number of deaths before a diving community gets itself organised in setting local cave diving standards and training. This was certainly the case in Australia in the early 70s, leading to the formation of the CDAA (Cave Divers Association of Australia) in 1973. For this reason, forums like cavers and techdiver can play an important role in rapidly disseminating information about standards and procedures used in different countries and different cave diving environments. So let's keep up the quality of the information interchange. Greg Ryan gregr@cs*.su*.oz*.au*
