Subject: Opinions
Ok folks......

With tedious regularity we seem to get a few posts relating to subjects
that have no place on this forum, notwithstanding that occasionally this
may be a genuine request for clarification, this usually ends up in a
justification exercise as to why somebody thinks 'in their honest
opinion' the info is valid. A recent one was relating to the use of pony
cylinders.

The trouble is that forum's such as this have a fair number of
'interested bystanders' for whatever reason - that is fine, it is one of
the functions of the techdiver forum - information exchange. This level
of involvement in the 'sport' of diving requires many things. The
trouble is that many people that feel they are 'out there doing it' or
to a large extent are the 'medicine men' pedalling the elixer of 'Tech
diving' do not have the basics sorted. I could wax on lyrically about
these weaknesses, but here are a couple of examples.

1. " I feel more comforatable with a main and a pony,since I can't
reach an isolator because my drysuit/underwear is for cold water use and
I can't reach behind". This is a classic. Expanded neoprene drysuits
have no application at this level of the sport - too restrictive, but
somebody told the owner that this was the right suit.

2. "I carry bottom gas in a stage and back mount deco/travel gas". Why?
- what happened to the first rule of redundancy - the dive team?.
Insufficient gas volume to allow a buddy to bail out to,Oooops, forgot
to mention the 'we bail out to air' devotees.

3. One of the training agencies had a stand at the Eurotek show in the
UK in October 1996. (they all had - who it is does not matter in this
instance). On the stand was a convoluted gear setup the like of which
you have never seen in your life - FFM,gas blocks + hose city. The
punters look at this and gaze longingly.Suddenly they desire to become
'tech' and start to look for a route to become the diver of this gear.
Only myself and Billy Deans spoke out in the auditorium advising those
present that if they wished to see an equipment rig that would kill
somebody , then drop by that particular stand. Hell Billy even took some
slides of it to use back home. 655 Delta (that was the stand number) has
become a part of technical training viz aids at Key West as an example
of what will ultimatley kill you.

How do we prevent this continuing? - Keep on at the people that are
missing the point. GMIII does not suffer fools gladly, hell neither
would I if some of my friends had died in preventable 'faux pas', but
the info is meant with the best of intentions. Like wise my droning on
here - keep on hammering away at the idiots on the fringe so the only
people that die of their ignorance are themselves.

Phew! - just had to get it out!

Regards
