     1996 California Chamber Day Raises Over $18,000 for
             The USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber

California Chamber Day is an annual event sponsored by the dive
boats and diving communities from Los Angeles and Ventura
counties to help fund the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.

The Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber, located near Two Harbors at the
West end of Catalina, is the "first line of defense" in dealing
with scuba diving accidents. Staffed by a volunteer crew, it is
on line twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and has been
in operation since 1974. The Chamber receives a grant from LA
County which provides part of the operating expenses, however
the rest of the Chambers funding must come from donations, fund
raisers, and class tuition.

Once a year, divers from throughout Southern California pay to
go diving, win prizes, and participate in a tour of the Chamber
facility. The dive boats, and local diving councils, organize
the entire event, and then generously donate boats, crew, time,
and all moneys earned. This year Chamber Day was held on May 1st
with participation of the dive boats; Atlantis, Cee Ray,
Charisma, Encore, Golden Doubloon, Magician, Maverick, Scuba
Express, Stargazer, Sun Diver, and Westerly from the San
Pedro/Long Beach area. The Chamber also owes a major debt of
gratitude to Sport Chalet, for registering 60% of the divers
through their Dive Boat Reservation Line. Over 250 divers
donated $65 apiece to participate in Chamber Day, helping to
raise over $18,000 for the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber. To all
