I'm not sure why Farb recommends it, but I would recommend it because of 
the fact that a lot more water gets into the loop on typical dives with a 
FFM than with a mouthpiece, and you really ought to have some solid 
experience dealing with a lot of water in the loop.

Again, I can't answer for Rod, but I would also recommend avoiding FFM's
on deco dives unless the mouthpiece has an integrated OC regulator with
the ability to plug in an unlimited OC gas supply (e.g., stage bottles).
The last thing you want to have to do in a hail-mary OC bailout situation
is to have to go blind so that you can stuff a bailout regulator in your
mouth.
