I've never tried banging the tank on the ground, but an empty tank will resonate a "ring" with each breath. The sound is different from the ring of a full tank (the full tank sounds more muffled - I don't think the tone is much different, just the "resonance"). I notice the ring when I'm down to about 500psi, which is long before any breathing resistance kicks in.
