Have a look at the Scubapro safety sausage.
It is sturdy construction, weighted open end with lift bag
like straps. You can use it as a surface deployed safety sausage, you can
launch it from depth as a drift deco line (the weights at the opening keep it
from dumping at the surface), and at a pinch you can use it as a light lift
bag.

This year diving on a wreck in Adriatic Sea my buddy and me were separated
from the boat. - More exactly the captain realized that, in the strong wind
and current we are not able to reach the boat, but he had to wait for the
other divers as well. - We spent more than 90 min. in the open sea drifting
with the current. The waves were around 2 meters high. The shore was 12 miles
away. Using the Scubapro type "sausage" we had to realize, the sausage must be
kept by hand in vertical position. The built-in weight is not enough to keep
the sausage standing. For more than 90 min. it is not an easy task!!! The
solution can be a special lead brick with a carabiner. On the surface the lead
brick can be attached to the sausage keeping it in vertical position. In spite
of this problem, the sausage worked perfectly. Without the bright red sausage
it would have been a long, long time to find us.
