Subject: Re: HID Lights

I saw the lights at DEMA and posted a message about them in January.
Topolovic made tewo sets of 200 watt portable HMI lights for me using
Deep Sea Power and Light's HMI light head and L&M's 12 V (2) and 6V (1)
batteries with the German ballast repackaged for underwater use. The
three batteries and ballast fit on a waist belt (25 lbs) and are cabled
to the head via 4 or 7 foot cables. Light out put is equivalent to around
1200 watts tungsten and burn full out for 45 min. He only built the two
and I own them both. They are the only portable HMI's that can be carried
by the cameraman. They have been used to light stills, video and cine.
The light head is scrimmed to do away with a hot center and you lose one
stop. At four feet, ASA 100 = f8. Topolovic was going to build a 50 watt
HMIs for video (= about 350 watts tungsten) but they would still be
expensive, relatively speaking. The HID light that they are releasing is
a good compromise for brightness/watt, weight/geometry and price.
Topolovic is a brilliant, forward thinking engineering and L&M products
reflect that and are good. Rod
