I didn't mean to suggest that Saft had batteries suitable for
your needs.

I just wanted to convey that the Ni sintering process available
to Saft when they first started making Ni cells has not really
been improved upon.

The history of the NiCd rechargeable battery is fascinating.
I feel like sharing the short version:

The patent was Swedish and was filed in the 1930s (late 20s ?).
The French Saft fiddled with NiCd chemistries in the early fifties
but they got nowhere with non-flooded cells. Then as the story
goes, the French president scoldingly showed the head of Saft a
lead-acid powered German built cigarette lighter. Saft tried and
tried but couldn't make a small enough NiCd battery with any
useful capacity. Failing at matching the performance of the
German lead-acid a Saft technician expressed his frustration
by destroying a NiCd module in a powerful vice. Somehow the
separator prevented the plates from shorting and the result
was just about small enough for a lighter. A NiCd powered lighter
was handed over to the President. Later Saft was shocked to learn
from the head of State himself that unlike the German device
the Saft cell didn't need a regular refill of water. Voila,
the "modern" NiCd drycell was born.

John
