Hmm, I've never heard of this. I've had the same pencil on my slate for years, and it works fine -- even the eraser worked, until I used it up. And everybody I know has had similar experiences. Just use any old pencil stub, and toss it if it goes bad. I've only seen one pencil actually fall apart from immersion. 'Course, I always dive clean freshwater. If you're swimming in something else, it could make a difference. Perhaps you could try soaking your pencil in a can of varnish, or try a different brand of pencil.
