John, microcirculatory injury is just one way to get "bent". Getting bent causes the same thing, and then more bends. You can tell the difference when there is an injury - it does not get better under pressure, whreas pain from a bubble will diminish when it iss contrracted. To tell you the truth, the injury and bend caused by rigid RBC's is likely not felt right away, as it would be like a bruise, it could be in the nervous system, like the spinal cord of brain, or it could be at the ends of the bones. You would feel the muscle damage the next day. Any circulatoy blockage or pinch off wouild cuase bubbles to get trapped , to form, to accumulate and grow, etc. All I am sure about is that you need good cardiovascular efficiency, which is achieved through regular exercise, something that has many benefits and shold be done whether you dive or not, and you need helium in the mix, and try to avoid getting too deep on air, and especially avod long exposures deep on air. I worry about deep air deco, as the 6-7 ata zone is close to the problem pressure for damage. If you dive in the 7-15 ata zone on air, you will certainly get damage, and it makes me laugh to see these fat slobs who are deep air divers talk about their ability to "handle it". I would bet certain well known , alligator-mouthed, deep divin' boneheads out there have MRI scans that look like a multiple sclerosis patient, and this (the brain damage) would explain a lot with guys like Hal Watts and a few others. Don't get me started, or I will have to call the Todd brothers
