Carlos Just few thoughts on rebreathers. >P.S.: If *I* were to try unproven technology, at the very least I'd make sure >it's not *cheap* unproven technology. In other words, I'd steer clear of $5k >rebreathers if I were you. From what I can tell the $5000 rebreather contains the most proven technology available. The CCR500 is based on the CCR-1000, MK15, MK15.5, MK16 line of rebreathers which are probably the most fully tested closed circuit mixed gas rebreathers in the world. None of the other choices including the Prism, Cis-Lunar, Odyssey, Stealth, Inspiration etc. can come close to this level of testing. Hence if you're looking for tested technology the CCR500 is the one to get. Either that or an old MK 15.5 etc. Since it's the same company making these things, and the CCR500 is purpose built for the sport market, I would elect to purchase it rather than something second hand built in 1973. I haven't seen the CCR500 and haven't seen a CCR-1000 for about 20 years however I recently saw a Biomarine Biopack-60. This unit is extreemly well built which I can't say about some of the other breathers I've seen. >But *please* don't make it sound like open circuit scuba is a thing of the >past, and if you're the last kid on the block to have a rebreather you're >uncool or whatever. I think you've missed a few of my other posts saying what a lot of useless junk these rebreathers are! It just depends upon you're application. Here's a bit of a story. I know a population of coastal cutthroat trout. I have been attempting to photograph these fish for about 3 years free diving and using open circuit SCUBA. In that time I have gotten exactly 1 photo. I made 1 trip to this location with my rebreather and managed to get an entire roll of trout portraits. The only problem with this was that there is also a population of 3 meter sturgeon at this location. Normally they are as shy as the trout but with the rebreather they were very curious and kept mucking up the water. Anyway, the point is, for my application results like this are pretty hard to ignore. On the other hand for regular sport diving out in the ocean I think SCUBA is a waste of time and won't catch on. When free diving I frequently have to ascend through groups of divers doing their advanced, or deep diving PADI open water check out :). Barrie
