A recent article in IMMERSED asked, amongst other questions about
rebreathers, "why do you want a rebreather".

'round here, we hear a lot of "how", "when", "how many" or rather
"how much" about rebreathers, but it seems that we have yet to hear
about "why"?

So, I'm asking:

Why do you want a rebreather?

Speaking for myself, I'm interested in rebreathers for:

- Extra bottom time. When I dive, I suck (compared to some of my
buddies); so those 80 cu ft are empty fast. Seriously, for this, I'm
working on my air consumption, and I look hard at 95 ft tanks.

- Ability to travel far to remote places I'd like to dive someday
(St-Lawrence gulf north shore; Anticosti Island and, let's dream,
the Labrador/newfoundland/northern Quebec shores of the Arctic Ocean
- WWWs need not apply) without having to carry a lot of bulky and
heavy consummables.

- Maintain a ppO2 as high as possible (don't worry about CNS ox-tox,
that cold water will make sure I reset the O2 clock promptly).

- The challenge to discipline myself into being competent enough to
operate something as crucial as a rebreather (read: a darn good
excuse to get a lot of underwater experience).
