I hear that Steve Gerrard is accusing me of not giving him survey data on his cave. First of all, let me make it clear that I don't give a damn, and secondly, I gave it to Jim Coke many years ago, right after he said I could not get to the end of his line. Well , I did, in one dive, and added 2,000 feet, and it took Gerrard 13 months and a sinkhole one mile further back to get to it. He mailed me the Aunt Jemima I put at the end of the line. Personlly , if I were Gerrard, I would be embarrassed not to be able to get there the way I did, but then he is not used to doing that kind of thing all of the time, and it is real deep, about ten feet, and real far, about 8500, but when a stage bottle goes 7000, what is the problem? I could have done it on hundreds, but the weenies had the lines all hidden and screwed up, and I had to go to the end of every one of them to find it. I think it took 17 visual jumps, not cool in a new cave, but at ten feet, you can stay lost for a long time and it won't matter. The other data , from Hilario's Well, which was the result of a competition between me and Gavin as to who could lay the most line on a solo dive in one day, is held by Gavin, as proof of his win. I even cheated, cutting out a side tunnel in one cave and reeling it onto my reel, and then going and laying it further out after I ran out. Little did I know that Gavin had in fact taken Hilario with him part way, as a reel bearer, and dumped four full Kahuna reels in one dive. When I complained about the assistance, he claimed it was in fact a hadicap, and should count for more. The worst part was that while I was decompressing in my cave, Gavin was standing on the edge of the cenote with the empty reels, and I could see him up through the water. I tried to get the adjustment for my 80 foot dive, but he would not go for it, any more than Gerrard would agreee that he basicly needs over a million feet of weenie cave to equal the 83,500 feet of Power Cave in Leon Sinks. That turned out to be the bottom of Dos Ojos, so Bill and I had the end of the line at both ends, which is the way it should be - and we only ever did those two dives - just like at home. Coke had a fit and wrote a letter to the Explorer's Club complaining about us. Maybe if Steve writes to them they will demand the data, and ask for an explanation of why we smoked this place. At the time, I wrote them back and quoted Bill Main, " You can make new friends, but you can't make new cave".- G
