I >have seen several designs at different places in Florida, and wonder if >anyone here would mind sharing their ideas, or putting me in touch with >someone who has a successful sidemount rig. > >Joe Helmick > Joe,I had some success using an old Scubapro stabilizing jacket as a starting point.I had a friend who was a metal worker,and he took two pieces of aluminum plate,one for each side of the jacket, about 4" x 8",and cut two belt slots in one end of each,running parallel to the long direction.At the other end was mounted a snap hook with a bolt through the eyelet of the hook.The hooks then clipped to 2 small d-rings mounted on the base of the tank.The plates were mounted to the waist belt of the bc,so the hooks acted as a pivot point,keeping the butt of the tanks close to the body.The valves were tethered using a bicycle tube worn figure-eight style across the back,and pulled through the armhole of the jacket & stretched over the tank.This normally keeps the valves close to the body as well,but may bee stretched to negotiate tight spots.I used this in church sink here in Tallahassee,as well as maddachalk near madison,checking out the little shelves there.Neither of these dives truly required sidemounting,but they were good practice sites,and I felt fairly comfortable in the rig.Balance seemed to be good,& everything was accessible.The best thing is to play around with a basic config,& adapt it to suit your needs..hope this helps.
