Joe,I had some success using an old Scubapro stabilizing jacket as a
starting point.I had a friend who was a metal worker, and he took two pieces
of aluminum plate, one for each side of the jacket, about 4" x 8",and cut two
belt slots in one end of each, running parallel to the long direction. At the
other end was mounted a snap hook with a bolt through the eyelet of the
hook. The hooks then clipped to 2 small d-rings mounted on the base of the
tank. The plates were mounted to the waist belt of the bc,so the hooks acted
as a pivot point, keeping the butt of the tanks close to the body. The valves
were tethered using a bicycle tube worn figure-eight style across the
back, and pulled through the armhole of the jacket & stretched over the
tank. This normally keeps the valves close to the body as well, but may bee
stretched to negotiate tight spots.I used this in church sink here in
Tallahassee,as well as maddachalk near madison, checking out the little
shelves there.Neither of these dives truly required sidemounting, but they
were good practice sites, and I felt fairly comfortable in the rig.Balance
seemed to be good,& everything was accessible. The best thing is to play
around with a basic config,& adapt it to suit your needs..hope this helps.
