Subject: Re: O2Tox - Experinces?

three times, twice in the old days (five years ago) when we were stupid
and pushed 1.7 at depth. one hit at 220fsw and one at 270. both on mix.
both scared the holy shit out of me.. started with vision narrowing, upset
stomache, my right arm twitched badly on both occasions... also heavy
narc type of brain strain (what to do), went up and it went away both
times. first one at 220 i was chasing a lobster. second one i was just
descending.. the 220 incident took a few minutes to go away as i had
to go deeper before being able to ascend due to the location of the line
so i sat there trying to figure out what to do. lots of things go thru
your mind... the 270 incident went away as soon as i started up the line.

one other incident on a deep (425) dive after a long deco, did all switches
by the book, air breaks, i was tired and the currrent was picking up, it
ws hard to stay at our target depth (back then 20fsw on 100%, we don't dive
pure o2 anymore, unless we're teaching a rebreather course or padi pool
sessions).. one of the other shitheads let go of the line and couldn't
get back to it, i went after him, switched to 50% for the swim but ended
up at 40fsw, when i got back to 20 and switched back to 100% after about
five minutes i felt like i was gonna black out, wierd, spots, good buzz,
and those thoughts of things i had forgotten from my childhood, nothing
important, just crappage.. switched to 32% and got out of the water five
minutes early.. stayed on o2 for about thirty minutes on the boat,
it was there... the o2 tox.. no doubt.

..... there is not doubt also that i have been one
of the
lucky one's to get by. also got a good case of whole body while diving
off the lava flow on the big island looking for that downed tour
helecoptor in 92. we dived
for eight days, with one day off in the middle... last day we did three
270fsw dives as a last ditch effort to find the hiller.. longest bottom
time was 25 minutes, the other two dives had ten minute bottoms.. the day
started at 3am and ended about 9pm. we breathed o2 on the boat between
dives and on the helicoptor to and from the site.. the next day both of
us (only two of us diving deep back then) had the "chokes". not too bad,
but we knew we had pushed past the limits. the water temp at 270 was
about 65 (upwelling from 3500fsw due to the lava flow entering the water)
the surface was so hot we had to drift off to deco or cook.. .sure was
nice around 15fsw tho, perfect temp... exept for all the explosions from
the lava and the land slides.. the best dives's ive ever done, my
first encountor with tigers too, would i
do them again... in a fucking heartbeat. you can swim right up to the
lava as it flows out of the mountain... un real.. sorry, off the subject,
i could go on and on about that couple of weeks. but i'll shut up now.

aloha,

dp
