In a nutshell: The only reason I do any of this kind of diving is to explore deep coral reefs (60-150 meters, I call it the "Twilight Zone") for new species of critters. I've collected over thirty new species of coral reef fishes at these depths, and have seen dozens more. Virtually every invertebrate we collect (usually accidently) at those depths turns out to be new to science. Many of the organisms at these depths are the sorts that harbor bioactive metabolites which have promising applications in medicine (cures for cancer, anti-HIV drugs, anti-malarials, you know, minor stuff like that). If I didn't have to pay for everything out of my measley salary, I'd be a lot further along than I am now. But at least this way I've been able to make all the rules myself. The future looks promising, however. Aloha Rich
