Statement It would appear that certain individuals unaware and uninformed of IANTD standards and policey have been giving mis-information on this forum. To set the record straight. IANTD is an international organisation and as such has international standards. This unfortunatly is apparently not true of certain other agencies. While the standards are international, certain policy with regard to instructor certification may vary country to country. IANTD in the UK currently has a hold on certifying new instructor trainers at all levels. This is a quality assurance process. IANTD UK does not have any such poilcey with any of the instructor levels INCLUDING Trimix instructor. Any IANTD Technical Nitrox instructor who meets the IANTD standards for entry into the Trimix instructor course will be considered. Interested parties will note that these standards are high (incidently Julian this does not include an HSE part 2). There have been in recent months, instructors who have expressed a wish to take this course, but unfortunatly have not met the criteria at this stage having only recently qualified as Tech instructors. There is unfortunatly no quick route to Trimix instructor, in some instances there have been instructors who have not met the IANTD standards but have been able to join a TDI course at Trimix instructor level, having attended this they have asked for an instant crossover. This is neither acceptable or applicable. IANTD do not give out cards for attendance only performance. Anyone who is a TDI (or ANDI) Trimix instructor will still have to meet the IANTD standards and be assessed at that level prior to earning the qualification. IANTD instructors wishing to crossover into the other agencies should expect the same. The Trimix instructor qualification is an extremely responsible position. It is becoming alarmingly simple to gain both Trimix diver and Trimix instructor grades with certain agencies. Certain instructor trainers themselves (at least in Europe) seem to have little practical experience with the subject in question and courses seem to be extremely short. Anyone wishing to take a Trimix course (either diver or instructor) should first ask the question "who is my educator" and "what experience does he/she have". You may get some interesting answers! There are currently seven Trimix instructors in the UK (not two as TDI would have us believe) any of which will be more than happy to help. Anyone not wishing to gain a certification from the UK can obviously go to any of the other IANTD countries where they will receive exactly the same answer. All contacts are available through IANTD HQ on 01202 983315. Kevin Gurr
